Happy Saturday! It’s your LYV Communications Director, Michelle Wright, again and today, we’re going to be talking about Mental Recovery.

Ahhh, recovery time…that sounds so relaxing to me, but then I remembered what recovery is really about in the fitness world – helping your muscles and joints get ready for the next round of exercise. I wanted to have a real definition, so as I like to do, I went to Google to get some help.

Here’s how recovery is defined:
(1) the action or process of regaining possession or control of something stolen or lost
(2) the process of combating a disorder or actual or perceived problem

Wow! Those definitions hit differently when looking through the lens of mental fitness and regaining possession or control of something lost or stolen. I mean how many of us need to do that? Just this week, I was lamenting some of the choices I made in my life. Lost opportunities, if you will. Ruminating and going down the rabbit hole of  “if only I had done this” or “I wish I hadn’t done that.”  And it got more and more bleak…until I remembered: Recovery.

I was a high school athlete playing basketball and volleyball. I went on to play volleyball in college and a few years after college (in a co-ed league).  But one thing I remember doing is “recovery”.  And truth be told, I hated it!

I’d have to go to the trainers office and they’d stick my legs in this whirlpool ice bath, or the trainer would stretch and manipulate my legs and ankles.  All to help either minimize the inflammation or get the blood flowing to different parts of my muscles. UGH! It was not pleasant at all!!

I would try to avoid it like the plague, until I realized one day, that it was helping my muscles recover from all the stress I was putting them through in practice. And that would help me perform better during games. Now, that didn’t mean I liked it or was rushing to get to the trainer’s office or anything, but I did discover its value.

The same can be said with mental recovery. The process of shortening my mental fight time, resetting myself and my boundaries which may have gotten a little lax, being able to handle difficult situations without going down the “if only” rabbit hole, setting up camp and living there for a a week or two. But rather, recovering, i.e. shutting the “I wish I wouldn’t have” door and moving on to the “what did I learn and what’s next for me escalator” that will take me to the next level.

What I also realize is that I need other people to help me recover. Much like the trainers in my sports days, I need people in my life who will walk with me through unpleasant things that will eventually benefit me in the long run.

That’s what the LYV flock is all about. Helping you with the tools needed for your mental fitness to elevate you to that next level.
